Back! Long Journal Goodness~

Journal Entry: Sat Jul 18, 2009, 9:23 AM

Ok I’m back!

As you can probably tell this is going to be a very long journal, so feel free to stop reading now.

Firstly I can say that while Wales may not have been my first choice for destination, it actually wasn’t as bas as it could have been. Yes everything was in Welsh and yes I couldn’t understand Welsh people when they were talking… but I’m sure I wasn’t hated there that much? Right? Well at least our caravan remained unscathed throughout the holiday.

For those of you that have no idea what a caravan is (I imagine I’m talking to anyone outside the UK now although to be fair I was under the impression it was a universal word…?) it’s a trailer? Er… no.. I really can’t describe it as anything other than a caravan… a static caravan… here’s a picture [link]

So yes… that’s what I was staying in for two weeks.

Apart from the accommodation though it wasn’t that bad, although I did end up getting sunburnt on the second full day. >.o I’ve never been sunburnt before… and it was painful DX… no one told me how painful it could be DX *is really a wuss.*

For the rest of the holidays then I was forced to keep applying aftersun in the vain hope that I wouldn’t peal across the back of my neck and my shoulders. Also… the pain of putting a wetsuit on >.o… I don’t want to relive it…. Thankfully it only hurt for about the first three days, however two of those days I did end up going in the water either Swimming or attempting to surf on what little waves there were. For the most part the waves just depended on the tide and your location so the fetch was long enough. We were in South Wales so really there was the possibility of a decent fetch in places.

Overall, the sea was the best part of going away and the only thing I can’t get to see where I am… I mean… we got to see seals, two dolphins in the bay, we went swimming, surfing, Kayaking and on a boat trip. And on top of that… the only place I could get a decent internet connection was the beach it’s self.

Originally I didn’t think I was going to have an internet connection at all out where I was, thankfully lifeguards apparently aren’t very good at guarding their own net so I logged onto a Netgear signal next to the lifeboat station on the beach. However this meant that I’d only got till my Battery wore down or my family dragged me and the car off somewhere as most of you who I talked to found out. That and the connection was only one bar in strength >.O.

Surprisingly in some of the towns we visited, there wasn’t a chance of more nets, in fact the only place I was able to get net from in a town for about 10 min, was from a church… :/ …. I stole net from Lifeguards and a Church…. That probably makes me a very bad person. XD

Also… this trip has made me realise though that if I want a broadband service in the future… I’m better off going with BT. The amount of BT openzones in towns was just o.o … I could have got on for free if we were with them and not on TalkTalk. But I suppose it all worked out in the end?

In a lot of ways though I’m just glad to be home now… there’s only so much I can take, people are lucky I didn’t go crazy with the internet deprivation. @_o Crazy me is not a good me….

But yes… so apart from having a good time at the cost we also went round lots of towns and apparently the “worlds smallest city”? All I can tell you about it is… don’t visit it… there are about 3 shops and 1 Cathedral and then a few houses and that’s it. Now don’t get me wrong, the cathedral is impressive, however, that’s all there is D>.

Saying that though, there are a few nice places we visited, including the ruins of a castle up against the sea, a butterfly house (the scale of some of the butterflies there was just amazing. >.> I want one... ) , a wildlife centre which had a surrounding walk in the countryside. That proved actually to be a good idea, the centre had built different hides out in woodlands and over marshy areas and the walk was about 5 miles but worth it. We got to see a kingfisher along the river also which was nice, but it was far too fast for me and I never got a picture of it which was a shame. There were quite a number of other birds we spotted including a heron although a lot of the other water birds live around by us so it wasn’t as nice as seeing something new for the first time.
We also got to see a small field mouse which literally wandered onto the path in front of us; I got about 20cm to it before it finally ran off. Round to the end of the trail there were also some Water buffalo which had been fenced in and kept by the centre although I’m not entirely sure what for other than to attract visitors maybe? They seemed happy enough though and just as we were looking at them there were some deer in the woods behind us. The deer however weren’t kept by the centre and so it was again nice to see some wild animals that you wouldn’t normally see.
Another good place we visited along the same lines was a wildlife park that focuses on helping endangered animals. Again the place was huge and it some of the enclosures were amazing. As you walked in there was the entrance to the lemur’s enclosure where literally you went though a double door and you could walk about in there with them. The Lemurs themselves seemed totally unbothered by your presance and you could get right up to them. It was also nice to see though that there were places in the enclosure that you couldn’t go so that if the lemurs had had enough they could just go there and get out of the way for a bit. There was also another huge enclosure with wallabies in too and that was amazing, instead of you going up to them, they often came up to you. They’d even let you stroke them and there was a gorgeous albino that lay down and went to sleep while I was petting it. >w< The whole place was just cuteness.
:iconsparklesplz: :iconsparklesplz: :iconimsorryplz: :iconsparklesplz: :iconsparklesplz:

However there… I have to say… >.> the meerkats are the best… I can’t help but love them anytime I see them. If I could… I would so own a whole pack of them in my garden >.> there’s just something so adorable about the way they scout for danger like they do and stand up on their back legs.

So yes… I could go on for hours squeeing about every single animal I came across there but I think I’ll stop for now.

So other places we visited included things like the Devils Bridge although to be fair that one was a little bit of a letdown, there are some stunning views in the area, however to go down one of the paths to get a clearer view of the bridges you have to pay. :/ Normally I wouldn’t mind if it was just a small fee to cover the maintenance of the paths and everything, however it was about £4.50 for a short walk along a public right of way. Something really didn’t seem right about that considering the fact that the paths were in disrepair in places and there was even a disclaimer about it not being their fault if you were injured. It really didn’t look safe enough for them to be charging that amount of money. So yes… we walked over the top of the bridge although we didn’t go down to take a picture of it.

Finally though a good place that we went to was right at the end of our holiday, it was a bee farm >.> <.< >.> and they had a shop…. And it sold mead… heheh XD
Now if you have no idea what I’m talking about, mead is an alcoholic drink created from fermented honey and actually used to be drunk by monks or so I’m told. Anyhow, it’s very sweet and often served as a desert wine. My parents both love it, and I was persuaded into getting a bottle myself too, so at some point in the near future, I have that to look forward to!

Overall though I suppose the holiday could have gone a lot worse… I could have been stranded in the middle of Wales without any sort of internet access at all and in the pouring rain or the boiling heat… however I did get internet and the temperature remained hot for the entirety of the holiday at about 20C. The water temperature wasn’t too bad either with it reaching about highs of 14C and the lows of about 6C in the morning when I first went in one day! Lucky the only reason I know the temps are that Lifeguards constantly update the sign on the beach with the temperature of the sea and the Air. So overall it was meh I suppose… there were good parts… although I’m so glad to be home right now. *Clings to the internet*

Oh and one final thing…

Coming home sometimes doesn’t run as smoothly as you would like. Picture this…. The car is loaded up with a roof box and dog in the boot… we’ve been on the road for 7 hours and then…. The clutch goes… and by goes… I mean snaps… there’s no hope of fixing it… and you’re on the motorway… in the middle of roadworks…

Welcome to my world…

Thankfully though after several frantic conversations we were advised to get out of the car (we were in the outside lane) and get onto the grass (actually mud) in-between the slip road and the motorway. That way we at least had 2 crash barriers between us and the other cars, and believe me when I say that some of them were such idiots then… some of them would zoom straight up behind us, realise the hazards were flashing and that they couldn’t go anywhere and then have to pull back into the middle lane and attempt to overtake but because they were so close behind us by that time, many of the cars further back hadn’t got a cat in hell’s chance of spotting the hazards and so they would end up right behind us and stuck too. >_< Then it was only when a truck driver would pull out further back, being sensible, that other cars would be able to realise what was going on… so yes… about an hour after we broke down there were some flashing lights and the police came… thankfully with their help we were able to roll the car back behind the cones and out of the way to wait for a tow… then they were off on their merry way to the next accident… and we waited…. And waited…. And saw 3 other tows go past…. And we waited some more… and finally another 1 and a half hours after we broke down a tow came to move us off the motorway. At this point though it didn’t seem that bad although it was raining and we couldn’t get back in the car because it was beyond the crash barrier and so safety. 1 and a half hours in the rain with the dog out and no where to sit actually went by pretty quickly. Oh and I’ll mention at this point the battery of the car is flat due to the hazards going on constantly. So finally we were loaded up onto the tow and they guy takes us off the motorway and to the next service station along. The people operating these tows offer a free recovery service off the motorway if you’re in roadworks as we were. They’re just paid by the council to move cars off there and so we had to get a different tow to take us home…

Now…

At least we were at a service station and we wee able to have a cup of tea and get warm inside. I also found out that Roadchef pays for free internet so I signed up and got online for about 10 min chatting to Jacks and Trailer (G1 club). It was then that the waiting began…

Now my mum has cover with the AA (Automobile Association) so we thought we were sorted and she rings up to have the guy tell her he’ll be there within an hour…

On the hour the guy arrived in his tow, now this guy was the mechanic and he basically opened up the hood, looked at the clutch and told us he couldn’t repair it and it would need to be replaced…. However… we knew this… we waited an hour for someone to tell us what we already knew? D>
We’ve had a lot of second and third hand (fourth even) over the years and things like this have happened to them a lot, we thought the clutch on the Berlingo would hold out a little longer, however apparently not.
Anyway… this guy tells us basically he’s going to take his time … goes inside gets a coffee and then sits in his tow and tells us someone’s coming to pick us up in an hour.

By this time we were all getting more than a little fed up, it’d already been 3 and a half hours since we had broken down and we were getting anywhere…

So yes… we sat in the car a little longer and finally my mum’s phone goes…

Apparently we were 17 miles from home….

Her cover will only stretch for 10 miles being towed back home…

So we had to pay another £50 to upgrade her membership so we could get home.

The lovely lady on the phone then told us we had to wait an hour for the tow again.

Time so far : 3 hours 45 min

An hour later of playing 3 of one 4 of the other, top trumps and cheat in the car with a pack of cards and there is still no sign of the tow so finally we get impatient and call them back to check where the guy is… we’re told he’s still on his way and it’s going to be another 25 min.

Time so far 4 hours 45 min.

Half an hour later the toe finally pulls up and the guy gets out. ‘Apparently’ he’d had to travel 50 miles to get to us… D>
Whether he was lying to cover his back or not, I don’t know… either way it’s not good.

Time so far 5 hours 15 min

So finally we all pile out of the car and get the dog to find the guy doesn’t want a dog in his cabin as some one could suffer an asthma attack. Now fair dos to that… but equally she travelled with us in the first tow and she was fine then. Anyway… we put her back in the car and it’s lifted up and we get in the cabin…

The cabin stinks… and I do mean stinks of fag ash…

If anyone was going to have an asthma attack, trust me... it would not result from a bit of dog hair that I should hope they would clean out of the vehicle.

So yes…. We finally get back on track for a whole 17 miles and get home…

The time was 10.15 pm…

We broke down at 4pm on the dot…

That’s 6 hours 15 min since we broke down.

From where we were it would have only normally taken us 45 min at the most…

I could have ^walked^ home faster…

I suppose the moral of this story is… don’t buy French cars… XD

So yes, the car is at the garage today and hopefully it’ll be fixed sometime next week… well… we can always hope.
